It was performed in New York City at Palmo's Opera House on May 16, 1898. The opera was first performed in the United States by the Carl Rosa Opera Company on Octoin Los Angeles, California. On 2 October 1897 the same company gave the opera's first staging at the Royal Opera House in London. It was performed by the Carl Rosa Opera Company in English and was supervised by Puccini.
